I am a bookworm at heart! There are some books I’ve loved, books that have changed my heart or my marriage or the way I see myself as a parent. I thought I’d share a few with you.
Favorite Kids Books:
by Lynne Reid Banks
This is a brilliant book that I read aloud with my kids. We were all mesmerized by the characters. This is about a boy who finds a cupboard that, when used with a special key, makes plastic things come to life. He puts a plastic Indian figure in there and this little man is alive. It is a great tale about the human spirit. When we came to the end of this story, not a dry eye remained in the house and we all experienced a sense of loss with the story being over! A great read!
You Are Special by Max Lucado
This little book is about the Wemmicks who have now stolen my heart. Punchinello gets lost, again, and finds his way into the Maker’s workshop. He is so busy collecting all of the boxes and balls he can, to keep up with the other Wemmicks, that he loses much in the process. The Maker gently takes him in and reminds him that he is chosen and loved and cherished…that all the boxes in the world don’t make Eli love him more.
Just the Way You Are by Max Lucado
This is another little book with a BIG message. A king decides to adopt 5 orphan children. Upon hearing of this, the children are overcome with excitement and they begin to listen to the villagers – who are telling them that they must impress the king. They make themselves so busy working to impress the king, that they don’t realize he has come. They turn him away saying they do not have time for him. One of the children, who thinks she has no special gift or talent for the king – waters his donkey when he gets to town. She comes to realize that her special gift and the thing he desires most, is her beautiful heart.
A beautiful tale for the heart of all! The King just wants to be with us, to hear about our day, to listen, to love us – to be Our Father.
This book is a beautiful tale of a little girl who is dyslexic and thinks she is dumb. She prays that she doesn’t have to go to school anymore; and the Halifax Explosion of 1917 happens the next day, killing thousands of Canadians. This story is a heart warming journey of a little girl finding the courage of her great grandmother as she comes to realize that the explosion was not God answering her prayer. This beautiful girl has the gift of story telling, as she shares the stories of her grandmother’s Irish Chain Quilt – she begins to create her own stories for an Irish Chain that will bring healing to what is left of her family. Inspiring and beauitfully told! A great read aloud – gives lots of opportunities for some great discussions. One of my favorites!
Favorite Books for Woman/wives
Feminine Appeal – 7 Virtues of a Godly Wife and Mother by Carolyn Mahaney
This book is a fantastic book. It reveals the truths of the Bible as Carolyn gently encourages you and I to seek Him in our marriages, without making you feel like you are a failure! I love this book and it remains one of the top books in my list of favorites! Look in my sidebar for a study of each chapter.

DNA of Relationships for Couples by Robert S. Paul and Dr. Greg Smalley
This book is written like a novel. It has 5 very different couples who are all seeking restoration in their marriages for very different reasons – they attend a couples intensive seminar. It is wonderfully written and because you are reading in a novel setting, you can relate to each character and many of their issues in their marriages, without it feeling threatening. It’s a heartfilled book and a really great read…even if your marriage is NOT in trouble! I highly recommend this book! One of my favorites…
Sheet Music by Kevin Leman
This book talks about sexual intimacy with a Godly attitude. It challenges you to embrace intimacy the way God desires for your marriage. It might just change your whole attitude towards intimacy! While we’re talking about Kevin Leman, I’m going to suggest this book to all parents. I didn’t get it until my eldest started asking questions. I wished I’d gotten it when he was about 4.
A Chicken’s Guide to Talking Turkey with Your Kids About Sex by Kevin Leman. This book makes you think about the attitudes you create in your children towards intimacy, from a very young age! Intimacy is beautiful in marriage – you can’t just tell your kids sex is bad until you are married because hearing that all your life and then trying to implement it into your marriage makes for a very difficult love life!! Highly recommend this book to parents. He’s blunt and to the point but he has some great points!
Loving God With All Your Mind by Elizabeth GeorgeWOW, this is a really good book about filling your heart with, and listening to, God’s TRUTHS! This speaks to me about living in faith and not emotion. This is a challenging book that I loved!!!
From Anger to Intimacy by Gary Smalley and Ted CunninghamI bought this book on the recommendation of a friend who just got the book herself. I often read marriage books since we frequently do studies on the forum (LovingOurHusbands). I never would have bought this book otherwise since I don’t think I have anger issues within my marriage. Let me tell you, it’s an amazing book that all married couples should read! It speaks about the effects of anger and forgiveness in your marriage (and all of your relationships) and gives you the tools you need to move past it and into true forgiveness and deep love! A book that really made me think about my own heart and the heart of my relationships. Very good.
I’ll keep adding as I read 🙂
